While it still looks good (much better than the highly compressed DVDs that have tons of blocking artifacts), this show was originally animated in SD resolution and was upscaled for Blu-ray (it’s still worth buying if you don’t already have the DVDs or are bothered by their compression artifacts).

What’s more, it was encoded at 1080p24 despite the opening animation being animated at 30 frames per second. This means that while the main show animation is fine, the opening appears choppy on Blu-ray compared to the DVDs. The movement is not as smooth since frames are missing.

Since 1080p30 is not supported by Blu-ray, the opening would need to be encoded at 1080i in order to show all 30 of the frames per second. Since it’s not possible to have the opening at 1080i and the rest of the show at 1080p, they could either encode all of the show at 1080i (like the Japanese Blu-ray release), or encode the show at 1080p while encoding the creditless opening in the extras at 1080i. I would personally prefer the latter, but I would be satisfied with either solution.

Since FMP! The Second Raid has been out for sometime now I am not going into the story in detail, but the Video/Audio transfer (Which is, for the most part why we invest in blu-ray). As some would note, this is one of the most cleanest and slickest looking animes to date. Coming from Kyoto Animation I would expect no less as this new addition to FMP! on Blu-ray was inevitable due to its slick visuals and fantastic designs. I should note that this is a triple dip for me. (Collected individually, then the Box Set, now this Blu-ray addition)

THE MOVIE ITSELF: (Maybe some spoilers)

If anyone has followed the first season to FMP! and even the addition FMP!Fumoffu you will know that this is the second season and a hell of a season it was. Unlike the last season, the 2nd Raid is really straight forward and it leaves out the random filler type episodes. This time around the story continues almost 3 months later and sorely focuses on Kaname and Sousuke’s relationship. To be short, in the amidst of all the craziness, they both realize how important they are to each other. As I said, I will not go into much detail, this was a great season you should check it out if you have not already.

I will be up front and say; “You haven’t seen FMP! The Second Raid in all it’s glory, if you haven’t seen it in Blu-ray!”

I have watched the DVD additions time and time again and this one is an eye opener the first time viewing it. It is definitely more vibrant, sharp, and the lines are really clean; not just another plain upscale like some thought it would be. The studio actually went in and remastered it for HD release and more importantly they removed a lot color banding. Though I might add, it is present in some scenes but rarely apparent. Just to check if my eyes were not lying to me, I went back to the DVD addition (Upscaled 1080p), and yes this is definitely a step up from that.

AUDIO: (Presented in 5.1 ENG/JP Dolby TrueHD) ^^b

Unlike the video presentation; the audio has been beefed up enormously. Some of the key upgrades in audio are more rear surround use and a bombastic use of the LFE (sub). What I appreciated the most was the liveliness that they gave the Arm Slaves; whether they were just walking or in the amidst of action, they definitely rocked the LFE thundering the house. Good stuff, not audio demo worthy, but good stuff for an anime. It would remind you of the Cloverfield monster rampaging through the city.

EXTRAS:

Unfortunately they did not add anything that the DVD additions didn’t have already. All of the extras which included Episode 000 and the Bonus OVA (presented in HD as well) are all crammed into the second disk. I should note that you can view a short trailer of the Blu-ray addition of Burst Angel; if your are wondering how it would look that is.

In conclusion, if you are a video/audiophile like me and you love to watch your anime in a high fidelity or you just love FMP! that much; you definitely want to add this one to your collection. This one is a nice addition to the Funimation Blu-ray venture. Here’s hoping for Season 1 and maybe Fumoffu for Blu-ray!

Even with all the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson last year (and doesn’t it seem as if each new week brings another celebrity meltdown?), I still looked forward to seeing “Apocalypto.” Why? If for no other reason–the subject matter, subtitles, and lack of star power made it a bold choice for a major studio release. Films of this nature generally go into limited distribution to develop an audience and critical word of mouth before expanding, if they ever do. But with Gibson at the helm, “Apocalypto” debuted with much fanfare and backing just in time to be considered for 2006’s Academy Awards. For some reason, though, I still missed “Apocalypto” at the theaters. I have heard every description imaginable from those that have seen the film–from the “best movie ever” to “excessively violent and disturbing.” And while I wouldn’t go to either of those extremes, “Apocalypto” is certainly an accomplished adventure picture.

Set in ancient Mayan times, “Apocalypto” is essentially the harrowing journey of one man, a youth named Jaguar Paw (a convincing Rudy Youngblood). Living a simple and isolated existence, his tribe are very at home within the forest. One day, the unthinkable happens. They are attacked by another group with apparent intentions of enslaving whomever they don’t kill. Youngblood’s wife and son are stranded in an underground well, many others are murdered, and Youngblood is among a dozen or so who are rounded up and marched out in bondage. The subsequent journey leads to a fantastical temple sequence, where it becomes clear that the prisoners are not to become slaves–but sacrifices. The remainder of the film deals with how Youngblood can escape this situation. The temple scenes feature a cast of thousands, ritualistic and brutal slayings, and a mob mania that is terrifying and believable. Racing against the clock to save his wife, Youngblood must escape back through the jungle–where all he has to help him are his cunning and an almost spiritual connection to his surroundings. The action is practically nonstop, it’s inventive, and it is beautifully staged. Much of “Apocalypto,” therefore, is absolutely riveting and wildly entertaining.

For the purists who will debate the film’s historical accuracy, I will neither deny or confirm the legitimacy of the events that transpire within “Apocalypto.” While there do seem to be some liberties taken with the historical timeline (as evidenced by a surprise in the ending–which I enjoyed despite its implausibility), I really don’t think that this film aspires to be a “historical document.” Gibson has made an adventure story using a Mayan backdrop. The feel and look of his picture stay as valid as possible to the timeframe, however, I never interpreted this picture as a “true” story. Guess what? Fictional liberties are taken in every motion picture. Otherwise every motion picture would be a documentary–and even documentaries have an angle or slant which make them less than “true” in many cases. “Apocalypto,” at heart, is an effective action picture that makes interesting use of its Mayan setting.

I guess “Apocalypto” is not for the squeamish–however, the violence depicted is by no means unusual by modern film standards. You can see much worse in today’s “torture” cinema, those films that pass for horror with current audiences. I suppose what makes “Apocalypto” more vivid is that the violence is in a believable context. There are some beheadings and some hunting scenes, but the brutality is intrinsic to the story “Apocalypto” is telling. I don’t believe serious minded filmgoers will be put off by seeing some savagery depicted in a film about ancient Mayan cultures–it’s not as if this is a Merchant/Ivory production with tea parties and witty banter.

I do recommend “Apocalypto.” Beautifully filmed, the technical merits of the film are beyond reproach. The cinematography, score, and editing all enhance this exciting tale. I imagine these elements really shone bright for those who saw this on the big screen. A great action picture that is for adults–check it out. KGHarris, 03/07.

A welcome change of pace for us who feel Hollywood keeps making the same picture over and over again. The first part of this film is the most unconventional but also hard to endure as only bad things seem to happen to the characters but once Act II arrives and the chase begins, grab on !. I can’t remmember the last time a film had my stomach in knotts like this one.

Some people here in Mexico have complained about the film’s historical accuracy since by the time the Spanish arrived in America, the Mayan civilization had already been taken over by other groups. In any case, Hollywood films are not the best way to learn about history.

When Braveheart came out over 10 years ago I remmember a friend telling me: “who would have thought Mel Gibson was a real director”, 2 films later he keeps surprising me with his directing skills. It’s too bad the public has let themselves be convinced by the media that he’s the most evil person to ever come out of Hollywood which is absurd. I guess they feel the more they discredit him the more they discredit “The Passion of the Christ”.

For once, Australia actually has something first. We have this first season on DVD and I love it. It is such a funny funny show and I was so surprised that Charlie Sheen is as funny in this as he is. Charlie’s brother Alan comes to stay with him (and brings along his son) when he gets a divorce.

You all know how funny this is and you don’t need another reminder, so I’ll just give you the run down of what’s on these four discs.

1. PILOT – Deal Him In. Charlie’s poker night with the boys includes a genuine boy – 10 year old Jake.

2. BIG FLAPPY BASTARDS. Talk about gull-ible. Seagulls invade the house when Jake won’t stop feeding the feathered freeloaders.

3. GO EAST ON SUNSET UNTIL YOU REACH THE GATES OF HELL. Tequila shots and a philosophical cabbie lead Charlie and Alan to a confrontation with their mother.

5. LAST THING YOU WANT IS TO WIND UP WITH A HUMP. Charlie and Alan discover a great place to score: Jake’s soccer games, home of single soccer moms.

6. DID YOU CHECK WITH THE CAPTAIN OF THE FLYING MONKEYS? A new dad for Charlie and Alan? Evelyn flips for a beau … until he drops her like a bag of cement.

13. SARA LIKE PUNY ALAN. On their last double date, Charlie got the incredible cheerleader and Alan got the incredible Hulk. Does Alan dare try again?

14. I CAN’T AFFORD HYENAS. When Charlie hits a financial pothole, he has to (gasp! shudder!) cut back on expenses.

15. ROUND ONE TO THE HOT CRAZY CHICK. Batter up! The guys bring home Frankie, a gorgeous woman with a baseball bat … and anger insues.

16. THAT WAS SALIVA, ALAN. Two and a half men – plus one and a half women. Frankie brings her eight-year-old daughter to stay.

17. ATE THE HAMBURGES, WEARING THE HATS. In his will, Alan names a guardian for Jake … and it isn’t Charlie.

18. AN OLD FLAME WITH A NEW WICK. (My personal favourite) My, how you’ve changed. Charlie’s old girlfriend wants to be friends. And now she’s a he.

19. I REMEMBER THE COATROOM, I JUST DON’T REMEMBER YOU. Twisted sister. Judith’s seductive sister once had a fling with Charlie but now she’s cuddling up to Alan.

20. HEY, I CAN PEE OUTSIDE IN THE DARK. Jake gets a guitar and an attitude. He just can’t seem to lose the blues.

21. NO SNIFFING, NO WOWING. Alan’s divorce attorney is a major hottie but Charlie discovers she’s too hot to handle.

22. MY DOCTOR HAS A COW PUPPET. Well at least it’s exercise. Alan resumes his childhood sleepwalking habit.

23. JUST LIKE BUFFALO. Shhhhhhhhhhhh! Jake repeats Charlie’s sexist comment in front of Judith’s man-averse support group.

24. CAN YOU FEEL MY FINGER? After a girlfriend has a pregnancy scare, Charlie decides a little snip-snip will prevent any future worries.

This is such a funny show and I know you’re gonna love it. I highly recommend this one.

This show is a not to be missed program. I have loved it since it’s first show. The entire cast make a great ensemble, working off of one another in great comedic timing. I have checked after every season to see if they will begin selling the DVD, I am sorry they have not yet made the series for public sale. I hope when they do, they put all of the current seasons on DVD and sell all of them in a boxed set. My vote would be a resounding yes for getting the DVD’s out to the public. Thank You.

The studio chief (Stanley Tucci) is desperate for a hit, so he hires a seasoned publicist (Crystal) to orchestrate a press junket that will cast everyone in a profitable light. The catch: The director (Christopher Walken) has abducted his own film in an act of artistic extortion, and Gwen’s sister and longtime assistant Kiki (Roberts) is the tru object of Eddie’s desire.

Chaos ensus at the luxury hotel where the junket is scheduled, and America’s Sweethearts pokes easy fun at the cynical machinery that keeps Hollywood running. Quotable quips are delivered in abundance, and while Zeta-Jones is readily convincing as a bitchy narcissist, Roberts effortlessly steals the show with her trademark charms. All of which makes America’s Sweethearts lightly entertaining, even though it never rises (like Roberts’s earlier Notting Hill) to the level of classic romantic comedy, hampered by a script that too often substitutes easy laughs for ripe satirical invention, flashing a phony grin when it should be baring its fangs. –Jeff Shannon

The first major American film about Russian cold war heroes, it re-creates the nightmare endured in 1961 by the crew of the Soviet nuclear submarine K-19, when an exposed reactor core nearly resulted in a nuclear catastrophe. Several crewmen died, and K-19’s captain (played by Harrison Ford) had to assert his command when near-mutiny favored his executive officer (Liam Neeson). This escalating tension gives the film its potent dramatic thrust, and both Ford and Neeson deliver intense performances while director Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark, Strange Days) ably controls a sub full of seething testosterone. It’s not as viscerally thrilling as the classic Das Boot or U-571, and some K-19 survivors protested the inclusion of inauthentic drinking scenes, but the movie benefits from grand-scale production valus, seamless computer graphics, and a compelling real-life twist. –Jeff Shannon
